Cranisosacral Fascial Therapy

What is CFT?

Gillespie Approach - Craniosacral Fascial Therapy is a form of gentle, non-invasive bodywork that was founded by Dr. Barry Gillespie. CFT blends Craniosacral Therapy and Myofascial Release Therapy based on Dr. Barry's theory that the craniosacral and fascia systems are one interconnected system.

The craniosacral system includes the structures of the brain, spinal cord and sacrum that gently pumps cerebrospinal fluid. It lies within and is connected to the fascial web. This system plays a vital role in maintaing the environment in which the central nervous system functions.

The fascia is a densely layered web of connective tissue that surrounds, supports, and protects all  cells and structures of the body from head to toe. With the ability to store and hold onto emtional-physical memories of trauma, this web also plays a vital role in the function of the central nervous system and cranial nerves.

how does infant cft work?

A healthy Craniosacral Fascial system allows for the free flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the brain, down the spine, to the sacrum and into the fascia. However, physical-emotional strains and traumas can restrict and tighten a freely moving system by exerting pressure on nerves, muscles, organs, blood and lymph vessels, and bones.

CFT works to gently unwind and release fascial strain by feeling for tightness within the body and then following how the body itself wants to move to unwind and release the strain. This infant-driven movement can look like stretching, bending, flexing, extending or twisting. The release of the fascial strain allows for better mobility and brain function by improving the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which helps to nourish and detoxify the body and brain. Dr. Barry belives that CFT is best performed as close to birth as possible, especially if mom/baby experienced a traumatic birth/delivery of any kind. Untreated fascial strains from birth trauma can result in a lifetime of suffering.
